Spring Cleanup Weekend
Come join the staff of Cass Scenic Railroad State Park as we work to make Cass all it can be! We’ll provide a place to stay, free of charge, for the weekend. You provide the muscle and determination we need to accomplish some much needed goals. A good family service project opportunity and what a great way to shake off the winter blues!

Murder Mystery Dinner Train
Find out whodunit on this uproarious train ride into your imagination. Enjoy a great buffet dinner, but watch your back, because somebody isn't going to make the return trip! May 30 – June 1
Whistles, Wings and Wildflowers
Enjoy a weekend full of birding and wildflower walks and talks, with a special train ride and a little history thrown in for good measure. Expert guides provided. Wide variations in elevation and habitat make for great diversity in species. See many northern species. This is a unique opportunity for late season birding at elevations of up to 4,800 feet. Our historic company houses are available at 20% discount with the purchase of tickets for the Whistles, Wings and Wildflowers Special train that departs at 7 a.m. (morning)

Schedule
Friday, May 30
4:30 - 5:30 p.m. - Cass Showcase, at the metal building on the walkway beyond the farthest end of the Company Store, behind the depot. The Showcase is a scale diorama of Cass and its industrial complex, accompanied by a historical orientation film.
6 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. - Wildflower Walk, meet at the Greenbrier River Trail parking area (just beyond the fire hall on the south end of Cass, last left turn before leaving town)
7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. - Orientation Meeting, meet at the Cass Showcase. Meet your leaders and hosts for the weekend and hear descriptions of the available tours and hikes. Presentations by leaders will be offered on natural subjects. Free refreshments provided.

Saturday, May 31
7 a.m. - The Whistles and Wildflowers Special will leave the depot. Return time is indefinite, but we will be back mid-afternoon at the latest. Along the way you will be treated to historical commentary by the park interpretive staff, and if time permits you will be given a tour of the reconstructed logging camp at Whittaker Station. Several nature hike locations are planned, including a walk-in from the lower switchback to Cass. All walks are lightly strenuous over uneven and possibly wet ground. The walk-in from the lower switchback is two miles along the railroad grade.
9 a.m. - 5 p.m. - The park's Railroad and Logging History Museum is open and free of charge. Located adjacent to the Showcase building.
4 p.m. - Tour of the locomotive shops by the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park interpretive staff.
5 p.m. - Tour of the town of Cass by the park's interpretive staff.
5:30 p.m. - The Last Run Restaurant and the Company Store Gift Shop will close.
8 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. - Evening program. A review of the day's finds, followed by leader's presentations on natural subjects.

Sunday, June 1
7:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. - Greenbrier River Trail birding walk. Meet at the Greenbrier River Trail parking area
9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Greenbrier River Trail wildflower walk. Meet at the Greenbrier River Trail parking area. Checkout immediately following.

June 28 – Saturday
Cass Scenic RR - Bike Off the Mountain
The bike adventure begins as you board with your mountain bike and depart for Bald Knob. You'll visit Whittaker Station a former logging camp and proceed to Oats Run were the engine will take on additional water. The train continues the climb deeper into the wilderness, finally reaching Bald Knob. Your bike adventure begins here. Your decent off the mountain is via forest service roads. These roads have the features of many popular single track trails. The ride is predominately all down hill until you reach Back Mountain Road, a paved county road that leads back to Cass. All skill levels welcome. A fun ride at your own pace. Helmets are required. Participants are encouraged to bring plenty of water. The mountain bike ride from Bald Knob to Cass is a 2-1/2 hour ride and roughly 12 miles long.

Train departs at 11 a.m. Price is $14 adults or children. Reservations required for this Bike the Park event.

Harvest Day
Fall Harvest Day is a day-long special event full of old-fashioned fun and games, live entertainment, and fall colors capped with a special evening train departing at 5 p.m. to Whittaker Station. Dinner is part of the evening train, with turkey and fixings on the menu.

Whittaker Trains depart at 9:30 a.m., noon, and 2:30 p.m.
The Bald Knob train will depart at 11 a.m.
Apple butter making is demonstrated on the riverbank at the parking lot throughout the day.
Local crafts and wares are for sale on the lawn next to the post office.
Hand-powered rail car rides, bicycles and kennel service are available at the recreation building at the north end of the parking area.
Cass Showcase showings will take place at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m., and 4:15 p.m.
The Railroad and Logging Historical Museum will be open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The rate for the evening train will be $34 for adults, $24 for children, and $14 for under 5, $32 senior.
You may print an advanced ticket purchase form and send in with payment for this event.
(This feature is not available until mid-summer 2008 after event details are complete.)

All events are free of charge except for train rides.

Come join the staff of Cass Scenic Railroad State Park as we work to make Cass all it can be with our first ever Fall Cleanup Weekend. You will be staying in restored historic homes within the town of Cass. These homes normally are rented to the vacationing public. You will be provided a private bedroom or if you bring a large enough group, an entire house for the weekend. Potential projects include litter pickup, interior painting, general cleaning, raking leaves, boardwalk repair, building construction and more. Please call or email for reservations. Limited number participants.

Work with FUN mixed in! - You will be provided with a complimentary t-shirt, and necessary equipment and supplies.
You will work a minimum of an eight-hour workday on Saturday.
There will also be a fellowship meal for everyone after the workday on Saturday.

Volunteer Reward Program - The Spring and Fall Volunteer Cleanup Weekends can be your start to climbing the ladder of our volunteer reward program throughout the year. Earn free train rides, vacation accommodations, and more!

Jobs Vary - Whether you are skilled or not, we'll be able to match you up with a job you can do and enjoy. If you have skills in carpentry, painting, small engine repair, landscaping, sewing, cooking, or something else, let us know and we'll try to put your efforts to the best possible use
