The Cass Company Store or the Pocohontas Supply Company as it was formerly called was established in 1902. This store played a vital role in the economic and social development of Cass and the surrounding area. Groceries, home furnishings, books, jewelry, clothing, toys, hardware and more could be purchased here. A post office and pharmacy were also located within the store.
By 1920, the Cass Company Store was enlarged to its present size and became one of the nation’s largest company stores. For many years the store grossed over a million dollars annually and provided credit to mill workers. By late 1960, the store advertised a going out of business sale during which the entire inventory was sold.
The building was empty until 1963 when a small group of local businessmen saw the potential profits from the sales of souvenirs for the newly established Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Today the Cass Company Store is owned operated by the state of West Virginia. The store provides a wide variety of railroad collectables, including t-shirts, toys, books, glassware and more.
